34 new genes associated with autism
Analysis of 37,269 autistic individuals pointed to 102 genes, including 34 genes previously not known.
This is the largest study, nearly doubling previous efforts.
About 80% of studied persons were assessed by intellectual abilities and developmental delay. As it turned out, more mutations in noted 102 genes are linked with more severe symptoms: average of 11.7-point lower IQ and 2.6 months more of a delay.
Preliminary data were presented on American Society of Human Genetics. Further details about specific genes might be soon available.
